Match Preview v St Mirren - 20th Jan 2024

We have a break from League one this weekend as we travel to Paisley to face St Mirren in the Scottish Cup.

Stephen Robinson’s side are having a decent season and sit fifth in the topflight. Due to the Premier league’s winter break this will be their first competitive game since the beginning of January.

The two sides last met on the 10th of October 2020 when they visited Palmerston, post covid, in the Betfred League Cup. Connor Shields and Aidan Fitzpatrick had us two up after just twelve minutes, but the visitors fought back and second-half goals from Jamie McGrath and Marcus Fraser earned a draw.

The last time we visited The SMiSA Stadium was in February 2018 when Liam Smith and Harry Davis scored in a 2-0 Saints win in their Championship winning season.

Our last win over Saints came in January 2017 when we won 3-0 on their patch, thanks to goals from Stephen Dobbie, Joe Thomson, and a Gary MacKenzie own goal.

Ahead of the game, manager Marvin Bartley said “I thought our game against Alloa was flat and we lacked a little bit of quality but on a positive note it is another point on the board and means that we have only lost once in our last six outings.

This week we focus on the Scottish Cup, there is no doubt that it is going to be a very tough test for us, but we have been good against teams from higher divisions so far this season in Motherwell and Queens Park. St Mirren’s current league position shows that they will again be a different challenge, but it is a game that we are all looking forward to. We will have to give them the respect, but we will be going into the game looking for a result and to get that we will have to be fully on it and at our best.”
