Clinical Finishing delights McIntyre

Jim McIntyre praised his Queens side for finally punishing teams when it matters the most.

The Doonhamers boss was thrilled that his side came out and took the game to Morton during the 3-0 victory on Saturday.

He said: “I thought we started the game really well and we knew the importance of the game with so few being left.

“It was vital that we started in the right manner as Morton’s results haven’t been great lately.

“We knew they would come and fight so we had to start with a high tempo and play the game the way we play it.

”We’ve scored from a great delivery from Chris Mitchell’s delivery and it was a goal that has been worked on in the training ground so that’s pleasing.

“The second goal came at the right time and Morton have tried to play out from the back and we’ve pressed them high, because we knew they liked to play out from the back and the work rate from the boys was superb.

“We managed to catch them out and punish them, which is great, because we’ve had several attempts in the past few games where we’ve not been clinical.

“The mentality has been great the past three or four months and we’ve been on really great form so if you offered me a 3-0 win at home before the game I’d happily take it.”

Queens also received a boost as Stephen McKenna made a return to action in the last 25 minutes after picking up an injury last month.

McIntyre was thrilled to have the midfielder back and he admits he is glad to have a fit and healthy squad in the run-up to the end of the season.

He said: “Stephen’s jag he had for his leg usually works, or it doesn’t, within a week but in his case it worked after two weeks.

“I’m delighted he’s back and he’s put himself back in to training because it bolsters the squad.

“We’ve also got Derek Young back so we had a full squad to pick from for the first time in a while.

“Thankfully, we’re healthy for the run-in but you never know what’s round the corner so I won’t count my chickens!”

McIntyre’s men hold on to fourth place in the league thanks to Saturday’s victory whilst Morton can be officially relegated on Tuesday night.

Queens have a break from Championship action next week as Paul Burns’ Testimonial takes place on April 6th at Palmerston. Ticketing information can be found on the home page of the website.
