Match Report

A trip to Montrose rounded off the season and with Jordan Houston and Gavin Reilly both carrying injuries, Joel Mumbongo and Harvey Walker started the game. Although injured, Gavin who was looking to make his 200th appearance for the club was named on the bench.

There was nothing between to the two sides in the opening ten minutes. But as Queens tried to create, Mumbongo played the ball wide for Walker on the left but a good challenge by Owen Emslie halted his progress towards goal.

Chances were few and far between for either side, until the deadlock was broken after seventeen minutes. The ball took a deflection into the path of Mumbongo and from just inside the 18-yard line he lifted a right foot shot high into the net.

Five minutes later, Walker played it in for Lee Connelly, the frontman tried to turn it in at the near post but it ended up on the wrong side of the net and the flag was up anyway.

The same two players were involved in a move on the half hour mark when Walker raced down the left to cross into the middle where Connelly was, but he was too short to get his head on the end of it.

Queens had the better chances so far and it was nine minutes before the break that the home side managed any kind of threat. Liam Callaghan floated a free kick into the danger area, but Josh Todd cleared with a strong header.

And with three minutes of the first half remaining, Mumbongo grabbed a second to extend Queens lead. Alex Ferguson flicked the ball into the path of the big striker, and he didn’t break stride as he hit the ball low into the bottom corner with his right foot.

HALF TIME: Montrose 0 Queens 2

As the second half got underway, Connelly tried to play in Mumbongo for his hat-trick, but the home defence cleared. And just four minutes later, they had pulled one back, when Callaghan fired a free-kick from 25-yards into the top corner over Harry Stone.

The game had a real end of season feel to it and on the hour mark, Queens made three changes, Gordon Botterill, Kieran McKechnie and Kyle Doherty were all introduced to the action. They barely had time to get involved in the game when Montrose levelled the scoring.

Craig Brown played a free kick into to the box and fellow sub-Aidan Quinn rose to send a glancing header past Botterill.

The heart had gone out of Queens, but Connelly did deliver a free kick into the six-yard box that was attacked by Kyle McClelland but Ross Matthews in the home goal also came out to challenge and the ball was cleared as the two collided.

Montrose were very much now in the game and another long free kick, this time from Jay Cochrane from just inside the halfway line was headed just over by Quinn.

As the free kick’s kept coming into the Queens box, McClelland almost headed one into his own net and from the resulting corner, Luke Graham cut inside before firing a left foot shot just wide.

With just under fifteen minutes of the game remaining, Reilly made his landmark appearance when he came off the bench to replace Connelly.

But it was the home side who found the net again when nine minutes from time, Ben Hermiston curled a shot towards the top corner from distance. Botterill made a great save, as he got a strong hand on it to turn it away but as the ball came back into play from the corner, Quinn got enough power on it to send it over the line via the underside of the crossbar.

With the game turned on its head, Lewis Gibson ran through the middle and possibly could’ve taken the shot himself but played it out to Ferguson on his left. The midfielder’s shot lacked power and ended up straight at the keeper.

In the final minutes, Doherty couldn’t connect when Reilly crossed, and Gibson was way too high with a free kick and overall, the ninety minutes summed up Queens season.
