Youth Update

Queens 16s faced the same opposition as last week, albeit this time at Palmerston. The game being rearranged from earlier in the season due to Covid-19. The youngsters were looking to build on a more positive performance 7 days previous. Queens came out of the traps quickest and following fine play through the midfield, Meechan’s left-footed shot went just wide of the near post. As the half progressed, Queens were trying to keep possession of the ball but the tempo of the game dropped; however, they were unlucky not to be in the lead with a Rinaldi header hitting the target but too close to the keeper. Queens were made to pay for earlier chances being squandered when sharp play down the right from Alloa caught Queens off guard and the low driven cross was unfortunately turned into his own net by Turley. Despite the half time score line, Queens still had their chances and were aiming to keep the ball where possible, albeit, the players were asked to take more control of the game in certain areas. The second half started in similar fashion, with the youngsters eager to get back into the game but without troubling the opposition goalie early doors. Three changes were made on and before the hour mark, along with a change of shape to attempt to keep the ball higher up the park for longer periods. There was almost an instant reaction with Bruce looking to pull the trigger, however, the recovering defender managed to prod the ball out for a corner. Currie and Kranston were in control of the middle of the park, looking to drive the team forward at every opportunity. Queens thought they were back level when Meechan lofted the ball high over the goalkeeper, only to see it dip too late and hit the bar. Unfortunately for Queens no one had followed up and the defender had time to clear and start a counter attack. A slip in concentration on an Alloa through-ball allowed the attacker in behind and made no mistake in rounding Wither in goals and slotting home. A bit of a sucker punch for the players- but that is football! Queens looked for ways back into game but chance became limited as time petered out; Meechan and Bryson both having shots from outside the box but to no avail. All in all, a bit of a mixed bag at times for the youngsters. There were many positives from the game but it goes to show that while you may be in control at times, concentration and decision-making across the park in crucial.
