Stephen's Thoughts

Captain Stephen Dobbie who took charge of the side yesterday along with fellow senior player, Willie Gibson and Davie Mathieson shared his thoughts about this week’s events and the two – one defeat away at Ayr United.

“It was hard finding out late on Thursday what was going on but at the end of the day its football and it’s more important that people are healthy.   I think it’s going to happen throughout the season, the St Mirren game was off because of it, it’s just one of those things just now and if people need to stay at home for 14 days then that’s the way it’s got to be to try to get rid of this virus.  So Willie, Davie and I are stepping in to try to implement what the Gaffer is wanting".

“It’s important we can help wherever we can, obviously being the captain I naturally do that anyway on the park and on the training pitch to try to help the younger ones along.  Yes this is a slightly different role as it’s still the manager doing all the work we are just trying to rely it onto the players.  Full credit to boys it’s not an easy situation and they gave us everything”.

Speaking about the game itself, Dobs added “Coming in two- nil down at half time after losing two goals that were preventable they gave us everything in the second half and we were just unlucky”.

“As the players came off at half-time, Willie spoke to the manager which just reiterated what we were thinking because I didn’t think we played bad.  I think we worked their goalie more than they worked ours until we went down to ten men and we were trying to chase it losing an extra man in midfield it’s disappointing not coming away with a point but we just move on to next week”.

“We continued the way we had been playing in the Betfred, it was a tough group, tough opposition but the boys showed they can play at that level against St Mirren and we probably should’ve won that game.  We have been in good form especially going forward we just have to learn from the mistakes, as in set plays, but that comes for all of us because all of us are back at set plays at the minute so from one to eleven it’s about trying to eradicate the mistakes.  Both goals came from corners – it just seems to be one goes in and one goes in straight away but I thought after that we defended great, I thought Gregor and Ayo won everything in the air, I don’t think Rohan had a save to make in the first half and we were two – nil down”.

Having scored from a penalty, did the goal-scorer feel his side should’ve had another spot kick?

“I was close to James and I thought he was clipped, when players move quickly it can catch your eye in a different way, the ref was in a different position but it is one of those ones that could’ve gone for us but it went against us and unfortunately James ends up getting a second yellow.  We will be missing him next week but Willie came on and did a good job”.

"We will have a look at it this week, have a good week’s training and speak to the manager about how he wants to set up against Raith”.
