Queens Win at Lesser Hampden

Queens continued their 100% pre-season record, clocking up a 2-0 victory against Queen Park at Lesser Hampden. It was very much an experimental line up as Allan Johnston continued to look at potential new signings in action. No less than seven trialists started the match for us, though one or two were familiar names to Queens fans. The only signed players starting the match were Kevin Holt, Dan Orsi, Gavin Reilly and Allan himself.

It was a sharp start though as the game kicked off ten minutes earlier than scheduled and Gavin Reilly, put through over the top, lashed home an opener after just five minutes, beating the home keeper at his near post with the sheer pace of his strike. We had the better of the first half and were probably worth our lead, though the home side should have levelled just before the break but a striker shot over when presented with a chance ten yards out.

We changed our trialist goalkeeper at half time for another one and as the half wore on Steven Black, Ian McShane, Pat Slattery and a Dumfries based trialist were all introduced as substitutes. Although the home side had some good chances in the second period it was the latter Dumfries based striker who clinched the result, seizing on a mistake at the back to round the home keeper sharply and place the ball in the net with about ten minutes to go.

A decent work out then and a good result considering the likes of Robinson, McGuffie, Higgins, Carmichael, Gibson, McKenna and Smith were not even in the match squad. The trialists will have given the manager food for thought with just one more game to play before the competitive action begins.
