Frank McGarvey

Everyone at Queen of the South was saddened to learn today of the death of our former manager Frank McGarvey at the far too young age of 66. Frank had been battling pancreatic cancer for a short time

He was player/manager at Queen of the South from July 1990 to March 1991, a spell which included a memorable run to the last eight of the then Skol Cup (Scottish League Cup) and an unfortunate 2-1 loss away to Celtic. He also took a significant part in turning Andy Thomson from a youth prospect into a first team regular.

McGarvey began his senior football career with St Mirren before winning a move to Liverpool. However, he was unable to break into the Anfield side's first team and never actually played for them before moving back to Celtic in 1980. It is for his spell at Parkhead that McGarvey is best remembered. During his 5 years there he scored over 100 goals, won 2 League Championships, 2 Scottish Cups and a League Cup also. He then returned to St Mirren and played a further 5 years there before taking the QoS job as his first move into management. After leaving Palmerston he returned to playing with Clyde and won a 2nd division title before finishing his career in Junior football with first Shotts Bon Accord and then Troon Juniors.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace.
