Introducing - Connor Shields

Connor is a forward who has just turned 23 years old. He started his career at Albion Rovers before signing for Sunderland from where he was loaned to Alloa Athletic for season 2018/19. Last year he made 21 appearances for Aldershot.

After signing a one year deal with Queens he said “Obviously I’m delighted, I was down in England last year so I am looking forward to getting back up the road and playing. I was with Alloa and enjoyed it so I’m looking forward to it. The whole Coronavirus thing has been a nightmare, so I think everybody is just looking forward to getting back playing. I can only speak for myself but it has been a long five months, just trying to keep yourself fit and ticking over because you don’t know when the season is going to start, but now we have a date I can’t wait to get started to be honest”.

“My season didn’t finish until the 25th of April so we had a plan until then, since that I’ve been doing a lot of running and been up the football parks doing ball work and been in the gym as much as I can, obviously there is limited resources but it doesn’t take much to go out a run, having said that pre-season will be hard”.

Connor enjoyed his football experience in England but found being away from his family hard.

“My time in England was good but Aldershot was far away from home and on days off it wasn’t easy to go home and see family. Now I’m staying with my Mum and Dad and I’m more happy and I’m not having to stress on my days off. It was a good challenge but it just didn’t work out and I’m glad to be home. I’ve been away before when I was at Sunderland, but that was only a couple of hours away whereas Aldershot was seven hours and it was a flight so it wasn’t easy to get home so being around my family will help this season”.

Having made the decision to move back to Scotland, he was sold on Queens.

“I spoke to the gaffer and he talked about where he wants to play me and what they want to do throughout the season so that appealed to me. Hopefully we can have a great season and push on for the play-off spots. I am really looking forward to linking up with Stephen Dobbie. When I was on loan at Alloa, we were three up within half an hour and then he scored a hat-trick and it ended up three each. I am hoping to get better and look forward to learning from him, he has great experience in the game so I want to learn as much as I can and I hope he continues his unbelievable goal-scoring form”.

“Last year I played a lot of games but then fell out the team so this is an opportunity to show what I can do. I hope to get a good number of games under my belt and help the team go as far as we can”.
