Queens made the trip to second placed Alloa looking to close the gap on Andy Grahams side. Manager Peter Murphy made one change to the starting eleven from last week, as Liam Smith dropped to the bench to make way for Jack Stott.
In tricky conditions the visitors made a quick start to the game and as Taylor Charters picked up a loose ball, he played it out wide to Kai Kennedy on the left but the wingers delivery into the box was collected by the keeper.
Scott Taggart picked up a booking within three minutes of the game starting and as he gave away a free-kick to the side of the box, Kennedy curled the ball towards goal but his effort came back off the inside of the post and took a bounce off the back of Guthrie and out to safety.
It was an attacking performance from Queens and as Kennedy ran at the home defense, he played the ball in to Guthrie at the near post but David Devine turned it out for a corner. Reece Lyon then had a shot blocked before Luke Rankin hit one wide for the Wasps.
Steven Hetherington tried to play in Callum Burnside but he was offside and as Queens went on the attack again, Charters played the ball across the box from the left to the unmarked Guthrie, his close-range effort was well saved by Liam McFarlane but the big striker fired home the rebound to put his side ahead.
The visitors continued to threaten and Matty Douglas got in on the act midway through the half but as he aimed for the top corner, McFarlane watched it all the way and collected.
Ross Stewart had little to do but he pulled off a brilliant save when he stretched to turn Burnsides cheeky right foot ball from the corner of the box away from the top corner.
In the final fifteen minutes of the first half, Lewis Stewart went down inside the box looking for a penalty but it was more that he stepped on the ball and fell and Jack Hannah cleared. Back at the other end of the park, Benji Luissint hit a right foot shot from 20-yards but it cleared the crossbar. And with the last chance before the break, the ball fell nicely for Stott but he sliced a right foot shot wide of the post.
HALF TIME: Alloa Athletic 0 Queens 1
Looking to get back into the game, Alloa started the second half strong and although they had a good ten minutes spell when Luke Rankin, Kurtis Roberts and Stewart all tried to make a breakthrough, Queens defended the area and there was no real threat.
As Queens started to regain a bit of control, Kennedy played the ball across but Brennan Dickenson couldnt connect. As the ball came back out, Stott kept his shot low but the keeper got his body behind it.
Charters was getting forward much more in the game and as he picked out Dickenson to his right, the ball was fired over. Four minutes later, Kennedy was out on the right but he too cleared the bar as his effort was inches over. Queens continued to shoot and Luissint had a powerful shot blocked at the edge of the box.
As Guthrie tired, Smith came off the bench and within three minutes of taking to the field had given Queens a bigger cushion. Dickenson standing just outside the box laid the ball off perfectly for the winger who was a yard inside and as he got the better of Devine to take himself to the corner of the six-yard box before lifting the ball over McFarlane from a tight angle to find the bottom corner.
The hosts hadnt caused too many problems but Calum Gallagher did head over. It was Queens who came closest to scoring again when Kennedy hit a curling shot from the edge of the box that forced a great save from McFarlane.
It was a deserved victory for Queens as they were good going forward and were solid at the back when called upon. It was also a massive three points in terms of keeping in touch with the teams above.
