Stenhousemuir

Stott (19')
Ross Taylor (93')

After three games on the road, it was back to Palmerston to take on league one leaders Stenhousemuir. With Brennan Dickenson picking up a tight hamstring against Hamilton, there was one enforced change to the starting eleven, Freddie O’Donoghue came in to the side to take Brennan’s place upfront.

It was an attacking start to the game for the hosts and as Kai Kennedy floated an early corner to the far post, Jack Stott hit a right foot volley over the bar. A minute later, Reece Lyon got on the end of a free-kick at the right-hand side of the six-yard box, he kept his shot low but Darren Jamieson got down to save.

The home side kept up the pressure and as Kennedy played in another corner, Scott McGill cleared ahead of Matty Douglas who was in the area looking to get his head on the end of the delivery.

Ross Taylor then made a break for the visitors and as Ross Meechan tried to get the ball into the area, Taylor Charters was on hand to clear.

Queens were still on top and some good play ended with Liam Smith firing the ball over. Stenhousemuir did win a corner but Stott cleared the danger with a strong header. And just sixty seconds later, he was up the other end of the park to fire Queens in front. As the ball came in from the left, he was just inside the 18-yard box and kept his effort low to beat Jamieson.

As the visitors tried to get level, Jack Hannah had to be alert to clear the ball from the line before Taylor hit a free-kick that was inches away from finding the net. In the closing stages of the first-half it was Gary Naysmith’s side on the attack and Hannah took a sore one as he collided with the advertising boards as he cleared, before Taylor was off target with his attempt.

Douglas had the final chance of the first half, two minutes before the break when O’Donoghue looked to be fouled at the edge of the area, the ref played on and as the ball fell to the defender he hit a left foot shot low but just wide.

HALF TIME: Queens 1 Stenhousemuir 0

Less than a minute after the restart, Queens were unlucky not to add to their lead when just 38 seconds into the second half, Kennedy cut inside from the left before firing a shot at goal. It was a decent effort but Jamieson pushed it out for a corner. As that was crossed into the box, Kinlay Bilham headed away.

Then from just inside their half, Zander Mackenzie hit the ball forward, his cross come shot was dipping under the bar but the keeper collected.

On the hour mark, Kennedy slipped the ball through to Charters and as he crossed the ball into the box O’Donoghue was sliding in but the visitors managed to clear for a corner. As that was played in Benji Luissint’s effort was blocked and as the ball broke to Lyon right on the line, his header was scrambled clear.

Five minutes later, Smith crossed from the right to Lyon at the back-post but he could only hook the ball back into play and the defenders managed to clear.

Midway through the half, it was Stennie who came close to scoring when substitute Finlay Gray crashed his shot off the outside of the post. Queens quickly hit back and a minute later, as Stott laid the ball back, Lyon wasn’t far away with a powerful shot from 25-yards.

Smith then burst through the middle but his left foot shot was too high and minutes later his cross was too hard for Kurtis Guthrie to connect.

Into the final fifteen minutes, Kennedy made a good delivery into the box but it was just too far ahead of both Lyon and Guthrie. Kennedy tried to make a break into the box but although the defender had his arms around the winger and he went down inside the box, ref Euan Anderson judged that he had gone down to easy and played on.

Queens hadn’t been able to add to their first half goal and as The Warriors threw everything at them Ross Stewart made a terrific save as Taylor was in on goal. They continued to push but Queens were defending well and as Queens won a free-kick, Kennedy played it into the box but as the front-line rushed forward they couldn’t get on the end of it.

In stoppage time the visitors won a corner and with all eleven of their players inside the Queens box, the keeper, Jamieson managed to get a head on the ball and flicked it on. Queens believed it came off one of the visiting players but the corner was given instead and this time, Stewart punched it out for another corner. Queens were getting on the end of the set-plays but weren’t clearing them far enough and as their fourth corner was played in it wasn’t dealt with properly and Taylor managed to fire the ball into the bottom corner to score with the final kick of the game to earn his side a point in the 93rd minute.
