Rangers B were the visitors for our third of six KDM Evolution Trophy matches. Manager Peter Murphy made five changes to the side that had taken on Kelty Hearts last weekend. Goalkeeper Ross Stewart, Captain Matty Douglas along with Liam Smith, Jack Stott and Kurtis Guthrie all dropped to the bench. They were replaced in the starting eleven by Lawton Green who took over between the sticks, Benji Luissint who was returning from injury and youngsters, Cole Burke, Euan Ross and Niall Rogerson.
Facing a B side was a new experience for Queens and no one really knew what to expect. In the opening five minutes, Luissint forced the keeper into pushing his shot from inside the box onto the post. But the visitors pushed forward and as Green tried to clear the ball came off Jack Hannah out for a corner. A minute later Alexander Smith cut the ball back to Cameron Fernie who fired over.
Queens won a corner of their own and as Ben Johnstone played the ball into the box, Luissint caught it with his right foot but hit it high and wide. With just under quarter of an hour played the home side were denied what looked like a penalty when Burke linked up with Reece Lyon and as Burke got the ball back, he appeared to be tripped but referee Cameron Stirling waved play on.
Midway through the half, Paul Nsio was through the middle but Green made a save. Minutes later Nsio was back in on goal but his shot from a tight angle was again saved by Green.
As play moved back up field, Ross laid the ball back out to Burke but his shot was off target. Queens were finding it tough going and with just over half an hour gone Kyle Glasgow cut inside but hit his left foot shot wide. Sixty seconds later a poor clearance by Rogerson fell nicely for Callum Burnside but the danger was cleared as Green got down low to his left to save.
The Ibrox side were having the better chances and Nsio standing on the 18-yard line with his back to goal took a touch, turned and fired over. As half time approached, Burnside was in on goal but his shot was blocked as Rogerson made a timely stop.
Rangers continued to look for an opener and as Fernie set up a chance for Burnside he mis-hit the shot and on the stroke of half-time Glasgow wasn?t far away as he fired the ball across the face of goal.
HALF TIME: Queens 0 Rangers B 0
Having struggled to take a grip of the game in the first half, Queens made changes at the break with Stott and Freddie O?Donoghue replacing Johnstone and Ross. And just four minutes after the restart they?d taken the lead. Grieg Thackray fumbled as he went to catch the ball and as it fell into the path of Luissint he made no mistake in firing the ball into the net.
Two minutes later, the midfielder almost doubled the lead but his header came back off the post.
With an hour on the clock, Christopher Eadie hit his effort over but they did draw level midway through the second half when substitute Cormac Christie drilled the ball low into the bottom corner. However, eight minutes later a good finish from O?Donoghue from inside the box restored Queens advantage.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Green misjudged a back-pass from Rogerson but fortunately for Queens there was no one on hand to take advantage.
Two minutes later, O?Donoghue found himself just inside the box but he was off balance and his shot was too high. Alexander Smith then cleared the crossbar with his effort at the other end.
In the final five minutes, Thackray came out well to make a save from Kai Kennedy as he homed in on goal.
