Relegated Edinburgh City were the visitors to Palmerston for our latest league one match, Jack Brydon, Gavin Reilly, and Kyle Doherty all started the game with Kyle McClelland missing out through injury and Lee Connelly and Joel Mumbongo dropping out.
There was a breeze, but nothing compared to the wind of last weekend so in better conditions, the first real chance of the game came after fourteen minutes when visiting keeper Ruairidh Adams pulled off a fine one handed save to turn Harry Cochranes effort out for a corner.
A minute later, Reilly chested the ball down for Josh Todd who in turn picked out Alex Ferguson, as the loanee returned the ball to Reilly, the striker was too slow in taking the shot and Adams cleared for another corner.
It was the home side who were looking likely to open the scoring and Dohertys low left foot shot couldve done with a bit more power, but the keeper spilled it, only to recover before Cammy Logan could get to the loose ball.
The visitors did try to hit on the break, but Momodou Sambou was caught offside on a couple of occasions.
Queens still searched for the opener and Ferguson did well on the left to play in Reilly but as he tried to make space for himself, the keeper was on hand again to save.
Midway through the half, Todd caught the ball on the half volley, but Adams got down low to stop it. And a sweeping move ended with Kieran McKechnie aiming for the top corner but hitting it well wide instead.
Queens had a few chances to go in ahead at the interval but hadnt taken them and almost paid for it five minutes before the break when Sambou caused problems to set up a chance for Findlay Marshall, but Harry Stone came out to collect at his feet to keep it level at the break.
HALF TIME: Queens 0 Edinburgh City 0
Four minutes after the restart Queens showed their intent to break the deadlock, as a corner was played in Brydon and others attacked the ball but couldnt connect and in the scramble that followed no one could force the ball over the line.
A minute later, Ferguson did well as he walked it into the box, but Adams again denied him. The second attempt was also blocked before a free kick was given against Reilly for handball.
Edinburgh were making it difficult and as they looked for a goal of their own, Marshall tried to lift the ball over Stone, but the keeper collected. And Kelsey Ewen dragged a left foot shot wide.
On the hour mark, Todd got the break of the ball and tried to place a right foot effort past the keeper but there wasnt enough curl on it, and it landed straight into the keepers arms.
It looked as though it was going to be one of those frustrating afternoons when Doherty was through on goal, but Adams came out to close the angle and the frontman shot against him. Reilly then fired the ball across goal, but Ferguson was too far away to connect.
The pressure finally paid off when substitute, Lewis Gibson played a cross in from the right wing and Reilly from inside the six-yard box headed the ball past Adams to give Queens the lead.
One nil still didnt feel enough and as Reilly tried an overhead kick, Edinburgh broke away, but Sambous shot was off target.
Four minutes before the end, Paul McKay settled the match when he met a Gibson corner at the near post to head home a second.
The final chance of the game came when Gibson showed good foot work to get into the box, but no one could turn it into the net and Ferguson fired wide.
In the closing minutes of the game, young Jay Burns made his first team debut coming off the bench to round off a good afternoon for Queens.
