Match Report

With Harry Stone not fully recovered from the shoulder knock he suffered at Cove; Gordon Botterill took over between the sticks in the one change to the side that started against John Rankin’s. Hamilton Accies.

After six minutes Kyle Doherty raced down the right and as his cross was knocked back out into the path of Lewis Gibson, but the youngster fired well over.

There wasn’t much in the way of goal-mouth chances, and it was mid-way through the half before we had another real attempt on either goal, this time, Lee Connelly cut in from the left but couldn’t keep his shot low enough and it too fly over the bar.

Neither keeper had a lot to do but it was Queens who had been closest so far and a minute later as Gibson crossed for Doherty inside the six-yard box the striker’s, shot was blocked by the legs of Jamie Smith.

As Accies made their way forward at the other end, it looked like they had two players offside, but the flag stayed down, and Kevin O’Hara hit the ball wide of the near post. The visitors then won a free kick but that was hit straight into the arms of Botterill.

With half an hour on the clock, Gibson did the same at the other end before Connelly out on the wing had Smith stretching to collect his set piece effort.

Ten minutes before the break Reghan Tumilty lined up a shot from distance, it had power but was well off target. Queens did survive a scare a minute later, when Efe Ambrose hit his own crossbar with a clearance.

The visitors had been forcing a few corners, but Botterill was collecting easy.

HALF TIME: Queens 0 Hamilton Accies 0

Four minutes after the interval, Gibson tried to make something happen and held off a few challenges to make his way to the by-line, he had Doherty up in support and managed to get the ball into him, but it was cleared.

Smith then got down to save a low shot from Doherty before Hamilton opened the scoring.

Botterill fumbled as he got down to block and pushed it into the path of Lewis Smith who was on hand to fire the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

The goal gave Accies a lift and they doubled the lead within nine minutes of the opener when Queens were caught and failed to mark O’Hara who knocked the ball past Botterill.

Queens did try to salvage it and Jack Brydon was unluck not to pull one back when he got on the end of a delivery from the right at the front post, but his header was just wide.

A minute later, substitute Gavin Reilly was millimetres away from scoring as his shot hit the crossbar.

And in the closing stages, Kieran McKechnie hit a free kick the wrong side of the post, Kyle McClelland had a header saved by Smith and the keeper blocked a right foot effort from Reilly to keep a clean sheet.
