Match Report

Falkirk were the visitors to Palmerston for our latest league one game, and on the back recent results, Queens faced the Bairns looking to make It a hat-trick of victories. But a poor team performance led to a 3-1 defeat and us dropping a place in the table to seventh.

Calvin McGrory (foot) joined the already injured Josh Todd (hamstring), Iain Wilson (foot) and Stuart Morrison (ankle) on the side-lines which led to the Gaffer making three changes to the side that faced Clyde last week. Paul McKay who hasn’t fully recovered from his hip problem dropped to the bench along with Ruari Paton. Meaning starts for Ewan Barge, Lee Connelly and Wullie Gibson himself.

Hoping to overturn the defeat against John McGlynn’s side in August, Queens were looking for a good start to the game and within two minutes the Boss was wiped out as he made his way down the right, but from the free-kick Stephen Hendrie was just wide of the near post as he kept it low.

However, the early signs were soon lost as a bad pass from Bange in the middle of the park was quickly played to Callum Morrison on the wing and a simple ball into the centre of the box was headed past Max Currie by Rumarn Burrell after just five minutes.

The visitors were now in control and Kia Kennedy delivered from the left only for Euan East to clear. Queens did break through Bange but as he played the ball down the channel for Gavin Reilly to chase the forward was barged off the ball by Coll Donaldson.

With ten minutes on the clock, goal-scorer, Burrell jinxed past East to fire a shot at goal, but Currie pulled off a great one handed save to punch the ball out for a corner.

Six minutes later as they looked to get back into the game, Connelly’s shot was blocked and as the ball spun to Reilly, he tried to control the ball with his chest, but it didn’t come off and midway through the half Queens fell further behind.

With an almost identical move, Kennedy picked up on a Gibson mistake and his wide ball to Morrison saw the winger use his speed to get him into an area where his cross ball again found Burrell in the box, and the forward easily headed home his and Falkirk’s second of the afternoon.

Morrison and Kennedy were a constant threat for the visitors while Queens struggled to create and failed to test Nicky Hogarth in goal. And as the clocked ticked down on the first half, Burrell turned provider as he set up Kennedy, but his effort was blocked by Ciaran McKenna.

Burrell had the final chance before the break as he made space, but under pressure from East he fired wide.

HALF TIME: Queens 0 Falkirk 2

Already with a mountain to climb, Queens introduced Paton at the break but before he could make a mark on the game, Falkirk made it three, as two minutes into the second half, Kennedy’s low drive across goal nestled in the bottom corner.

Strangely enough Queens started to come more into the game after the goal and enjoyed a spell where Connelly and Connor Murray linked up to create an opening and Paton collected a net ball from Connelly but as the substitute lined up the shot Liam Henderson swept the ball clear.

With just over an hour played they did pull one back. Paton laid the ball off well for Murray who showed composure to knock the ball past the keeper.

But the boost didn’t last long and as the visitors took over again, Queens had to clear Henderson’s header as a free kick was floated into the box.

As the rain came down, it was a miserable afternoon, both on and off the park.
