Brechin City Match Preview

After a break for the William Hill Scottish Cup, we return to league business and welcome Brechin City to Palmerston on Saturday.

City were our opponents when our league campaign got underway back in August. We were four - one winners that day, Derek Lyle scored a double with John Rankin and Lyndon Dykes getting the others. Our last meeting also resulted in three points as Jason Kerr scored the only goal of the game to give us a narrow victory.

Speaking to the Queens website, Manager Gary Naysmith has been looking back on last week's cup game and ahead to the visit of Brechin.

"I thought our overall performance against Partick Thistle in the Cup deserved for us to get at least a replay. I felt we matched Thistle all the way in what was a very close game.

It was as well as we have played for a few weeks but the two goals we conceded were preventable. To concede from a counter attack so late in the first-half was disappointing and it handed the initiative to Partick. However, the boys stuck at it and although there was a wee bit of luck with Ross Fergusson's equaliser, I thought that as the game progressed we did more than enough to get a draw.

It was great for Ross get his first goal for the club and I thought he played very well in what was his first start. However the end result wasn't to be but to run a Premiership team so close reflects very well on the boys and they have set standards that we need to maintain from now until the end of the season.

This weekend will be a completely different game from last week. With Brechin sitting at the bottom of the table, there's an expectation for us to take all three points but football isn't that easy to predict and we know we have to at least match the performance against Partick to get something.

It was a close game the last time we played each other and they were probably unlucky not to take something that day. They're a better team than the points they have accumulated suggests. They are still looking for their first win in the Championship, we need to be on our guard and make sure that they don't get it against us.

This league is unforgiving and it takes a bit of time for teams to settle into it, Brechin have started to find their feet and have grown in confidence. One thing for sure is that they will be a stronger side to the one we faced at the beginning of the season, but as I keep saying we have to focus on getting our own side of things right. Hopefully we will be able to carry last week's solid performance against Partick into the league campaign.

The attendance last Saturday was our best of the season, I hope the way we competed was enough to encourage a few to come back to Palmerston regularly as having a positive atmosphere really does help.

It was great to have Callum Fordyce available again, he returned from injury last weekend and played an hour. That was always the plan as we didn't want to push him too hard on his first game back. Kyle Cameron replaced him in defence, coming off the bench for his debut, it was good to get him some game time as he will be vital for us in the weeks ahead.

We are continuing to work with the other players who are sidelined, Derek Lyle is recovering from his calf injury, but this weekend might still be too much to ask of him. Jordan Marshall (ankle) is back running but it will still be a couple of weeks yet before he will be back to full fitness and Kyle Jacobs (knee) and Dan Carmichael (hamstring) are continuing their rehab but are both still at least a month away.

Shaun Rooney will also miss this weekend due to suspension".

The match which doubles up as our annual ladies day is sponsored by D-elegance and will kick off at 3pm.
