Queen of the South winger Danny Carmichael reckons that the people of Dumfries will turn out to support Derek Lyle’s Testimonial tomorrow as the striker is a legend in the dressing room and the town.

Lyle is being honoured with a game at Palmerston against a team of Rangers Legends to mark his three spells at the club and the 109 goals he has scored that has made him the fourth highest goalscorer in the Dumfries club’s history.

Carmichael said: “I have played with Derek for a good number of seasons and know that he is a legend about Queen’s and Dumfries. Even the people in the town who do not follow football know who Derek is.”

“He is a character in the dressing room and terrific to have about the place. He picks everyone up and he is the main point of contact for anything that is going on.”

“He more than deserves his Testimonial.”

Carmichael reckons that it is not just Lyle’s off the field role that he deserves recognition for as he explained: “Derek is also a really good goalscorer and he has been a really good servant to Queen’s. He is still scoring goals at 36 and he will go on and have another good season.”

The Doonhamers XI that will take on the likes of Andy Goram, Barry Ferguson, Lee McCulloch and Billy Dodds will be made up of players from their 2008 Scottish Cup team and other notable figures from their recent history and Carmichael is hoping to be picked by their manager Jim McIntyre.

Carmichael said: “I am hoping to be involved alongside a good number of old faces but it will be up to Jim who is coming back for the day.”
