Burns bounces back in big win

Paul Burns returned to action on Saturday and is eyeing up another return – to Hampden, seven years after his last visit.

The midfielder is the last remaining player from the 2008 Cup final side still playing for the Doonhamers and he used the semi-final against Aberdeen as his motivation ahead of knocking out St Johnstone.

Burns said: “I was watching some of the videos of 2008 last night. It was a wee bit motivational and it was really good to look back on it. Seeing some of the goals we scored and how many fans we took with us was great.

“It would be nice to go back to Hampden.

“But we aren’t there yet and we have another round still to go before we get there, so we can’t be looking too far ahead of ourselves.

“I‘ve watched my goal against Aberdeen in the semi so many times and I would love to do it again at Hampden.

“It is something that I will always have and there are plenty of memories to relive.

“I hadn’t actually watched the final of 2008 before Friday night and I don’t actually know why I started watching it.

“I think I was maybe a bit nervous thinking my first start, so I turned it on to try and get me into game mode. Thankfully it worked.”

And work it certainly did as the 30-year-old made a stellar comeback from a serious knee injury with second half goals from Derek Lyle and Gavin Reilly sending Queens in to the last eight for the first time since 2008.

With Queens knocking out the holders, Burns insists James Fowler’s side don’t fear anyone in today’s draw.

He said: “It wasn’t a bad day to come back into the team and get involved again, especially in the Cup.

“You don’t think about knocking out the holders, you treat each game as it comes. They are a Premier League team but we handled them well.

“We dealt with everything they threw at us and we should a great resilience all over the park.

“We had to show the great team spirit we have and thankfully it paid off for us

“We are in the quarter-final and only one round away from Hampden but we’ll take whoever we get and we’ll approach it in the right manner - we would prefer a home tie but I think we are more than capable of beating anyone here.

“On our day I think we are as good as anyone.”

The draw for the last eight takes place today at 2pm.
