Fowler reflects on Cup triumph

Saturday’s Cup upset belonged to Queen of the South and James Fowler was thrilled to make Monday’s draw for the last eight.

The Doonhamers swept aside St Johnstone with second half goals from Derek Lyle and Gavin Reilly – a duo who share 28 goals between the two of them.

With Fowler’s men marching in to the quarter finals for the first time since 2008, the Queens gaffer spoke of his delight at his side’s performance.

He said: “I’m really pleased and it’s viewed as an upset with St Johnstone being in the Premiership but - with the group of players we have and being at home – we didn’t think it was an impossible task.

“We’ve had some good wins here against Rangers and Hibs but when it’s in the Cup it’s a bit different so we’re delighted.

“We freshened the team up a little bit, Danny Carmichael and Iain Russell have been brilliant for us all season so it was hard to change things but this squad is flexible and they’re a great group.”

The last time Queens reached the last eight, the Doonhamers made two trips to Hampden – including the final against Rangers – but Fowler was quick to focus on Monday’s draw first and foremost.

He said: “In the distance, we think it would be great and it’s something all the players and coaches want to get to but if you look too far ahead you can come unstuck. We’ll look forward to the draw on Monday and hope to get a home tie.”

Meanwhile, Saints gaffer Tommy Wright spoke of his frustration as the last year’s Cup winners crashed out.

He said: “It’s disappointing going out of any cup but especially when you’re the holders. There was nothing in the game, neither ‘keeper had to do anything in the first half.

“We never really cut them open and carved any good opportunities.”

The draw for the last eight takes place on Monday at 2pm.
