McIntyre reflects on Rangers result

Jim McIntyre pointed to David Templeton’s stunning strike in the second half as the turning point for Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Rangers.

Queens were 2-1 up at half time but Templeton scored moments after coming on as a half time substitute and Rangers started to run away with the game following the 25-year-old’s goal.

McIntyre said: “I think the goal changes everything after they scored so quickly. You’ve got to give Templeton great credit because he’s lashed it in to the top corner and it’s a great finish.

“We fell out of the game in the second half but you’ve got to remember the level of player that Rangers have got here. I’m pleased we’ve came here and put on a good show albeit we’ve lost, which is disappointing.

“The disappointing thing for us is the two goals we lost at set plays, it’s a major strength for Rangers and I felt we should have dealt with that better.”

However, McIntyre praised his injury plagued squad as Queens lead twice at Ibrox through Gavin Reilly and Iain Russell goals.

The gaffer was adamant the aim for the Doonhamers doesn’t change after Queens’ first loss of the league campaign and he still has his mind set on promotion.

He said: “The injuries have been well documented but I thought the players gave a great account of themselves.

“We knew we could cause Rangers problems and we certainly done that in the first half on numerous occasions but I felt we could’ve went forward quicker and it might’ve presented a few more goalscoring opportunities. We didn’t do that and it came back to bite us.

“The target doesn’t change for last season, we know it’ll be tough with the addition of the three teams but we’ve got to aim for the play-offs. It’ll be difficult but we’re stretched at the moment and hopefully we’ll see two or three of them back for the next game.”

Meanwhile, Rangers manager Ally McCoist was disappointed with the way his side started but he believed they turned on the style after the half time whistle.

He said: “Our performance in the first half wasn’t good enough and the two goals we lost were inexcusable. The reaction from the players was first class and we looked a different side in the second half.

“Queen of the South were excellent today in the first half and I watched them playing Dumbarton and they were excellent too. It’s a good competitive league and that hasn’t surprised us.”

Queens now face a two week wait until they’re next game, away to Falkirk in the Championship.
