Jim McIntyre was thrilled at his Queens side as they got off to a fantastic start to the season on Saturday.
The Doonhamers beat Alloa 2-0 thanks to goals from Derek Lyle and Gavin Reilly and the gaffer was relieved to pick up three points, in what is set to be a competitive Championship season.
He said: “We were looking to get off to a great start with a home game and by scoring a couple of goals as well as getting a clean sheet you can’t ask for any more.
“I think at times we were lucky we didn’t concede, we were defending for our lives at times.
“However, as well as the chances we’ve put away we’ve also had two or three excellent opportunities.
“Overall, with the amount of chances we created we could’ve made the scoreline more comfortable.
“Credit to Alloa though as they’ve had a couple of good chances themselves but I thought we were the better side and we deserved to win.”
McIntyre was also quick to praise Gavin Reilly for his superb strike just before half time as he felt his side were up against it at the time.
He said: “It was great to see the link-up play between Gavin, Derek and Iain which was followed by a cracking finish from Gavin. He’s at his best when he’s instinctive and we want him to be more like that this season.
“Alloa’s diamond formation caused us problems at times but we felt we could hurt them in the wider areas and we certainly done that so I’m delighted.”
Wasps Boss Barry Smith felt that his side only had themselves to blame for the defeat but he could take away some positives from the season-opener.
He said: “A couple of mistakes have cost us and we need to cut them out of our game.
“I thought we played some good stuff in the first half but unfortunately it didn’t fall our way today.”
Queens travel to Dumbarton next weekend in a 3pm kick-off at the BetButler Stadium.
