Thrilled Queens boss Jim McIntyre hailed his side for a crucial 3-0 win over Dumbarton – but warned them that it was not over yet.
Iain Russell, Derek Lyle and Kevin Holt all scored to give the Doonhamers a three point lead over Dumbarton in the race for the play-offs but ‘keeper Zander Clark also received praise from McIntyre.
He said: “I’m delighted but I don’t think either side played well in the first half but we managed to put away a chance and that was it in the opening period.
“Second half we looked better and we were a threat, especially on the break and that’s a fabulous result for us.
“At times it didn’t make for great football because of the pitch but the be all and end all is three points.
“We showed great character after two defeats back-to-back and we haven’t lost three in a row all season – that says a lot about this team.
“The key moment in the game is Zander’s save and we break up the park and we’re clinical.
“I’ve obviously got a lot of praise for Zander but Holty’s goal is fit to win any game.
“It gives us another three points but if anyone thinks that it’s done and we’re in the play-offs then we’ll come unstuck.”
McIntyre was quick to look ahead to next week’s important match against Livingston at Palmerston.
Queens know that if they match or better Dumbarton’s result, they will seal play-off football – something the Palmerston boss would love to do.
He said: “Whoever finished fourth and third in the table will have it tough but it’s a great reward and we want to be a part of it because that’s been the aim since the start of the season.
“This result has given us an advantage but that’s all it is – it’s back to work all over again.
“The play-offs have been a fabulous introduction for us and also the bottom five teams in the Premiership, as well as the fact we wanted no meaningless games towards the end of the season and the play-offs help make it more interesting.
“We’re in a good position but there’s still a lot of football to be played.”
Queens final home game of the season takes place this Saturday in a 3pm kick-off against Livingston in the biggest game of the Doonhamers campaign.
