On the back of thumping wins last week both sides were entitled to enter todays game with a fair degree of optimism. Manager Gus McPherson made two changes to the line up that had, eventually, beaten Ayr United with a return to the back line for Steven Black and upfront for Kevin Smith with Alan Reid and Tam Brighton dropping to the bench. For Dundee ex Queens man Ryan Conroy took his place amongst a strong and experienced starting X1.

After driving up through rain, snow, fog and then sunshine in a fairly typical Scottish day the game kicked off in bright but chilly conditions and it was the hosts straight onto the front foot with Queens keeper Robinson stumbling over a back pass before hacking the ball out for a throw in this being the first in a number of scary, wild and sometimes brilliant moments for the keeper today - he`s entertaining if nothing else!

Lee was more reliable a few moments later as he punched an early free kick away as Dundee settled quicker and took a firm control on the first half. They were soon to threaten again as they found space down the flanks, not for the last time, but Reily could only end up by shooting well wide. For Queens it was a struggle to get out of the half and the only glimmer of a forward movement see`s Johnston`s cross just evade Smith.

Smith ploughing a lonely furrow up front then made the most of a long ball out of defence which he catches up with out on the touchline. He holds on to it well and even better to make himself some room and move to the edge of the box and send in a fine shot that Rab Douglas parries clear. Dundee rapidly counter and again have acres of room down their left, the cross comes in and in far too much room its Jake Hyde who is on hand to slot the ball past Robinson to give the home side the lead.

Dundee now are in almost total control and the possession stats at this time must be very one sided, having said that they make little in the way of clear cut openings but the signs are there that all this possession must eventually tell. Left back Lockwood moves forward and again is in far too much space as he fires in a 20 yard effort that Robinson pushes away at the expense of a corner.

Next action of note is the first yellow card of the day to Queens youngster Kevin Holt who slams through the back of his man to pick up a deserved card. Young Kevin`s day goes seriously downhill from here on though as two minutes later Dundee double their lead. Again they have the freedom of the flanks as they go down their left sling over a back post cross that goes over Holt`s head but not Nicky Riley who fires past Robinson. Riley it turns out over celebrates his moment and picks up what would be a crucial yellow card for his troubles.

At this point it looks like Alan Reid is being readied as a sub and the back three that is not working looks to be about to be changed to a back four as you`d assume the under pressure and already booked Holt will be withdrawn for his wide wing back role for the more natural full back in Reid. However before all this can happen Holt is beaten again down the wing by Riley and brings him down out on the touchline to pick up a second yellow inside 8 minutes and make the long trudge off the field. A harsh lesson for the youngster who has been one of the notable plus points of recent weeks but today found himself up against a team and opponent in full flight who probably exposed his inexperience. So less than 30 minutes on the clock down to ten and two goals behind not an ideal start. The sending off see`s Queens bring on Alan Reid for Stephen Simmons.

If he hadn`t been sitting in the changing room now young Holt would have wondered what he`d done to get yellows a few minutes later when Scott McLaughlin kicked out at his marker in full view of ref Richmond, a petulant daft kick out in the best traditions of Rooney and Beckham but one that got a wee lecture and not a card of any colour, a strange one.

In the space of a minute we see the two sides to Lee Robinson the spectacular and then the heart stopping. Firstly Dundee again find room down their left and the dangerous cross in is met on the volley by Queens own Stephen McKenna who forces a spectacular save from his own keeper from his volley. This new found scoring touch that Stephen has found in recent weeks almost keeps going but at the wrong end this week. A minute later its the scary version of our keeper as he dribbles past the striker in the area but only just. He makes a far more orthodox contribution as the half draws to a close as following an uncharacteristic slip by Craig Reid Dundee fire in another cross that sees Robinson punch clear and Dundee unable to do anything with the follow up.

The half ends with a Dundee free kick that Conroy curls over from a fairly central position. With that Ref Richmond calls a halt to procedures and Queens leave the field having been pretty much out played for the whole 45 minutes and fans hoping that the second half wouldn`t be as bad as it looked like it would be.

Half Time Dundee 2 Queen of the South 0

Worries that we could be on the end of a real doing aren`t eased any as again Dundee are straight into the attack on the resumption sending in a cross that found no takers in the first minute. Keeper Robinson again causes himself unnecessary problems, and a few palpitations amongst the traveling fans, as he collects a ball and then under little pressure throw the ball out to himself just a little too far and has to be very sharp to get to it before the slightly startled forward  can capitalise.

In a game where we haven`t featured much as an attacking force its very much against the run of play that Queens surprisingly get back in to the game. Danny Carmichael gets space and goes down the wing were he is unceremoniously brought down by Lockwood for a yellow card for the full back. The free kick comes in its met by the head of Chris Higgins who sends it into the bottom corner for his first goal for us.

Back into now and a minute later even more hope for Queens. Dundee`s Riley picks the ball up on the wing and cuts inside Higgins who makes a challenge but no contact as Riley goes down, Ref Richmond is quick into action blowing up and getting his cards out, the on hand Craig Reid goes ballistic thinking its a card for Higgins but its a yellow for Riley and his second of the day following on from his goal celebration and he is the second man getting an early shot of the Dens Park showers, he leaves to the sound of the traveling fans telling him just what they thought of him.

Back to the action and all of a sudden its Queens beginning to dominate but much as Dundee did in the first lots of the ball but not much in shooting chances. Scott McLaughlin being the guilty man next as he gets the ball in space in the box but dallies over his shot and allowing the Dee`s to get it clear. Dundee are still a threat on the counter as Queens push forward and its Irvine into our box who crosses and the ball hits Craig Reid on the arm to loud appeals from the fans for a penalty - looked ball to hand though I`m probably a little biased. It all adds to a sense of frustration amongst the home fans as they must be beginning to worry that they might let this one slip.

As before though we continue to have the ball but aren`t making chances and Dundee remain a threat on the counter as McKenna is sharp to dispossess Conroy on the edge of the box before Benedictus blasts it over. Dundee introduce Callum Elliot for Hyde and Elliot`s first involvement see`s his low cross in evade strikers but not defenders as we clear the danger.

Queens finally force another save from Douglas as he easily holds a Carmichael header as manager McPherson signals attacking intent by withdrawing Higgins for Nicky Clark. The game should have been all over a minute later though as Elliot picks the ball up on the wing and then slaloms his way past 3 defenders, draws Robinson and slips it past him but also the post. A superb run that was worth a goal but thankfully for us went unrewarded.

A further attacking change for Queens as Black is replaced by Brighton as we now have just the two defenders on the park. As Queens push forward theres going to be gaps now and it takes a fine last ditch tackle by Alan Reid to rob Benedictus. Queens though charge forward again and Smith again does well to hold it up and link it out to Brighton whose cross back in is just too high for Smith.

With the game entering the last minute Queens get their clearest chance to salvage a point. Carmichael finds Smith and he takes off advancing to the edge of the box before firing in a shot that see`s Douglas pull off a fine diving save, despite his years the ex Scotland keeper remains one of the best in the league. Queens though get the ball back in but Smith cant latch onto a loose ball. Dundee get it clear and its 3v1 now with Queens winning the ball back through keeper Robinson - hes been quiet for a while now so off he races, ball at his feet, over the half way line and if you`ve gone this far its time to just keep going so Lee is soon 30 yards from his opposite numbers goal and ahead now of pretty much the whole Queens team - he then miss controls it and Dundee get a throw with Lee now racing back whence he came Dundee don`t react quickly enough to make us pay for it.

Deep into injury time now and Queens have a throw down by the corner flag and with Robinson now only being on the halfway line, a bit defensive there Lee, as Dundee launch another counter attack that see`s Lee get safely back and able to watch as Conroy`s shot goes over. The final action see`s Smith caught offside as Queens launch it long as Charlie Richmond brings it all to a close.

Full Time Dundee 2 Queen of the South 1

A strange game, almost got a point at the end of it though in truth over the piece a Dundee win is no more than they deserved. Webmaster Andy`s going to have to add some more formation options to the report page as we looked to be either 3-6-1, 3-1-4-1-1 or 3-5-1-1 early on but I`ll have to for the report go for the 3-5-2 starting option. The initial line up of a back three though allowed an in form Dundee side far too much room down the flanks and they and in particular Riley made the most of that going into their early lead and coupled with the early sending off of Holt meant at half time you feared for us. The enforced changes though, early goal and then the red card for Dundee though gave Queens hope in a game that should have been long gone and given that it`s a little hard to leave the game thinking what if we`d gone for it a little earlier?

Positives today? Well a battling performance showed some decent team spirit and if nothing else we`ll need that in the coming weeks. Kevin Smith had a hard job as a lone front man but held it up when he could and caused the odd problem, Despite being loaded up with numbers midfield at times in the first half were over run and Dundee had acres of space down both flanks for most of the game, At the back Steven Black did little wrong and again looks a decent bet for the future. In goal Lee Robinson is an entertainer several heart attack moments as he miss controls the ball, a mazy 75 yard run and a couple of fine saves probably see`s him as top man today.

Given results elsewhere and the ravages of the Scottish weather todays defeat doesn`t drop us down the table so its as we were for the visit to Palmerston next week of third place Falkirk in what`s sure to be another tough game before the Christmas festivities kick off.
