Successive wins at Palmerston against League leaders had moved Queens off the bottom of the table and up to 7th. Next week we`re back at Palmerston and will need to avoid successive defeats to bottom sides if we are not to return there ourselves. So tight is the table that victory at Ayr could have sent us into third spot but defeat moved us back to 9th and below our hosts again.

Gus MacPherson made three changes to the side which had gone down heavily at Kilmarnock on Tuesday. Two of them were enforced with Craig Reid out injured and Kevin Smith suspended. In addition Nicky Clark dropped back to the bench. In their place came Ryan McGuffie, Tom Brighton and Danny Carmichael. The hosts two had problems with the experienced John Robertson and Gareth Wardlaw missing out with injuries.

Queens made a promising start but the first near thing of the game came when Lee Robinson horribly mis-kicked a clearance straight to Michael Moffat. However he recovered his poise to block from the young striker twice. That apart Queens were well in charge of the opening 20 minutes or so and Scott McLaughlin twice sent shots fizzing narrowly past Kevin Cuthbert`s goal as they sought the breakthrough. However, about half an hour in the home side began to get on top and, in truth, from then on in they carried most of the goal threat, even if it was hardly non-stop pressure. On 33 minutes Robinson did very well diving to his left to tip a Mark Roberts shot wide and a minute later he produced a miraculous save from the same player, though in any event Roberts was ruled offside and it wouldn`t have counted. Before the interval former Queens right back Michael McGowan struck a shot narrowly wide following a fine run and then Alan Trouten also had an opening snuffed out. It was the home side who went into the break on the ascendency.

Early in the second period Scott McLaughlin had our best chance of the game when he found himself through on goal six yards out but wide left. Kevin Cuthbert did well to smother at his feet as the midfielder attempted to lift the ball over him. A few minutes later Cuthbert got lucky when he came 40 yards from his goal to take a free kick and slipped as he made contact with the ball. It went straight to Tom Brighton but was moving too quickly to be controlled and Ayr managed to get enough bodies round the ball to stop any opportunist efforts until Cuthbert scrambled back to his goal. The former Queens trialist also made a relatively comfortable save from Stephen McKenna`s well struck 40 yard effort before the `Honest Man` began to reassert themselves.

A clever pass from McGowan slipped Moffat in on goal but Robinson saved bravely at his feet. Queens made a succession of changes to try to liven things up but to no great benefit. Clark replaced Johnston, Holt came on for Brighton and finally Smillie swapped places with Carmichael not long after the young forward had ended a good passing move with a tame shot at Cuthbert. Needless to say, within two minutes of the third change being made Scott McLaughlin picked up a knock in a challenge for the ball on the edge of the Ayr box and limped his way through the remainder of the game. Hopefully he`s done no further damage by doing so.

On 83 minutes Ryan Smillie tried to latch onto a ball lobbed into the penalty area and went down in a heap under a challenge from Ross Robertson. It looked a weak shout to be fair but Ayr weren`t hanging about and broke quickly upfield. A clever pass was dinked through the back line and Mark Roberts found himself with the ball at his feet six yards out. He took a touch inside to creat an angle and then poked the ball in at the near post, leaving Robisnon no chance.

And that was that really. Queens huffed and puffed their way through the last six minutes, with Campbell sent forward too but never created a chance of note. Indeed James McKernon came far closer to doubling the advantage when his shot missed the target despite looking in all the way. We are ahead of Dundee at the bottom by just a single goal at the moment and it is the Dens Park men who are the next visitors to Palmerston in seven days. We will still be without Kevin Smith for that one but will need to find a way to score a goal surely.
