Match Report

Queen of the South continued their defence of the Ramsdens Cup and are through to the Third Round after a 2-0 victory over Airdrieonians at the Excelsior Stadium.

On-form striker Derek Lyle scored either side of half-time and was unfortunate not to net his second hat-trick of the season with two goals disallowed for offside and a header which struck the post in the final moments of the match.

The Queens line-up saw two changes from the 3-3 draw at Livingston on Saturday with Mark Durnan in for Chris Higgins and Ian McShane taking the place of Paul Burns with both incomers starting for the first time this season.

Ian McShane enjoyed a rare start

The away side began the match slowly although they did almost take a fortunate lead after just 3 minutes as the ball broke to Iain Russell on the edge of the Airdrie area.  Russell tried his luck and his shot deflected off Ian McShane and was heading for the corner only for Colin Stewart to show good reactions to keep the ball out with a low diving save.

Airdrie just about edged the opening period and should have taken the lead after 21 minutes.  Queens `keeper Calum Antell attempted to claim a corner but fumbled the wet ball before keeping out a close-range effort from Liam Coogans.  The ball rebounded the edge of the box to Gregor Buchanan who struck the ball well but Antell was equal to that too as he flew across his goal-line to keep the scores level.

As the half wore on Queens came into the game more and more and fashioned a half-chance for Stephen McKenna through Derek Lyle`s good work on the left.  Lyle cut the ball back to McKenna on the 18-yard line only for his shot to strike a defender and Iain Russell could not control the rebound which drifted wide.

After 40 minutes Lyle had the ball in the net for the first time with a fantastic overhead finish only to see the assistant referee`s flag raised.

The Doonhamers were motoring now and should have taken the lead on 43 minutes as a swift counter-attack saw substitute Dan Carmichael find Iain Russell on the left with a cross-field pass and the former-Livingston forward swept the ball across the goalmouth to the on-rushing Derek Lyle at the back post.  Lyle`s finish did not match the approach play however as his shot struck the goalkeeper and Airdrie survived.

The Queens centre forward made up for this miss minutes later however as Chris Mitchell`s cross from the right was deftly redirected by Lyle on the edge of the box and found the far corner for the striker`s sixth goal of the season.

Lyle directs the ball into the net

The half-time whistle blew just seconds later and Queens just about deserved to be a goal in the lead.

The Doonhamers almost doubled their lead moments after the restart as Iain Russell found space at the back post to cut the ball back towards Stephen McKenna but the midfielder could not reach the ball and the chance was gone.

Airdrie then had an opportunity snuffed out by good defending from Ian McShane before Lyle had yet another goal ruled out for offside.  Queens had pulled the home defence from side to side and found Dan Carmichael free at the back post but his volleyed effort was mis-hit and Lyle smashed the ball in from three yards only to see the assistant with his flag up yet again.

The home side almost levelled the scores on the hour mark as right-back Grant Evans` skewed cross drifted over Calum Antell and the ball struck the crossbar and bounced back into play.  It was almost a fortunate leveller for Airdrie but Queens got away with it and consolidated their lead just 3 minutes later.

The second goal resulted from a Chris Mitchell corner from the right that drifted over everyone.  Iain Russell gathered the wayward cross on the left corner of the 18 yard box and jinked inside before curling a low ball across the goal for Derek Lyle to fire the ball home and put the away side into a commanding position.

Lyle waits at the back post to increase the lead to 2-0

Airdrie had struggled to create anything of note since the restart but were gifted a chance to break as Ryan McGuffie`s pass was cut out by Jamie Bain who drove at the exposed Queens defence before cutting the ball across towards his team-mate.  Queens` Mark Durnan was there to intercept the ball though and Queens cleared the ball to safety.

Queens then had a break of their own with 5 minutes remaining as they quickly turned defence into attack as Derek Lyle fed Dan Carmichael to run at the home defence.  The winger tried a curling shot from the edge of the area only to send the ball wide when a return pass to Lyle may have been a better option.

Airdrie had a final chance to get on the scoresheet on 90 minutes as Willie McLaren found himself with a free header at the far post and with the goal gaping was denied by a fine save from Calum Antell in the Queens goal.

Derek Lyle had already been awarded the man of the match award but almost capped his fine performance with a hat-trick as his stoppage time header smacked off the base of the post.  The Queens hitman had come as close to a hat-trick as you can get without actually getting the third goal but his brace was enough to see the holders of the Ramsdens Cup into Thursday`s Third Round draw.

19:44 Whilst Queens have been scoring plenty and conceding plenty. Jim McIntyre will be looking for a stronger defensive performance tonight.
19:45 The teams are out on the artificial surface and we`re almost ready...
0 min THE GAME KICKS OFF
1 min Queens have lined-up in a 4-3-3 formation with Russell and Paton either side of Lyle up front and McGuffie sitting in front of the defence.
3 min Good save Stewart! Queens almost strike lucky with the ball breaking to Russell whose shot flicked off McShane but Stewart reacted well.
7 min Airdrie threaten from a corner where Barclay had a free header blocked before a weak penalty shout for Durnan`s challenge. Queens clear.
15 min Yellow Card : Mark Durnan strides into midfield but is taken out by Airdrie`s Jamie Barclay.
17 min We`ve not had a huge amount of goalmouth action to tell you about. The home side have probably had the better of it so far.
21 min Good save Antell! Best chance of the match comes from an Antell error as he fumbles a cross before redeeming himself by saving from Buchanan
22 min Substitution : Carmichael on for Paton
24 min Michael Paton picked up a knock after attempting a cross and is replaced whilst Airdrie bring on McMillan for Barclay.
30 min Queens have a penalty shout of their own as Chris Mitchell swings in a deep corner and two players from each hit the deck in a heap.
31 min Queens are beginning to test the Airdrie defence now as McShane sees a header deflected wide for a corner which comes to nothing.
37 min Half-chance for Queens as Derek Lyle does well on the left and cuts the ball to McKenna on the edge of the area who sees his shot blocked.
39 min Airdrie threaten themselves as Gregor Buchanan rises well to meet a corner but his header doesn`t threaten Antell.
40 min Queens have the ball in the net! But it`s ruled out. A fantastic overhead finish for Lyle but he was adjudged to be offside.
43 min Massive chance Lyle!Blistering counter-attack from Queens as Carmichael releases Russell on the left to cross for Lyle but his shot is saved
45 min GOAL QUEENS! Lyle the scorer - Airdrie 0:1 QOS
45+1 min It has slowly been coming and Queens take the lead. Lyle nets for the 6th time this season as he redirects Mitchell`s cross into the corner.
Half Time HALF TIME - Airdrie 0:1 QOS
Half Time It`s been a pretty quiet game so far with Queens just about deserving their lead as they grew into the game as it wore on.
Half Time Derek Lyle`s goal was nicely flicked into the corner from the edge of the box, in fact his previous miss was probably an easier chance.
45 min SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
47 min No changes from either side and Queens look to double their lead but McKenna can`t quite get on the end of Russell`s cut-back.
48 min Good defending from McShane as Airdrie`s Coogans sends in a dangerous low cross but the Queens midfielder snuffs out the danger.
56 min Lyle has the ball in the net for the third time but once again is offside as he buries Carmichael`s cross-shot.
59 min Off the bar Airdrie! Full-back Grant Evans miscues a cross from the right which flies over the head of Antell and rebounds off the crossbar.
60 min Decent effort from Russell as Queens take a quick free-kick and the forward tries his luck from distance but it flies a couple of yards over
61 min The attendance here in Airdrie is 637 - I reckon it`s about 50-50 in terms of home and away support. Good crowd yet again from Queens.
63 min GOAL QUEENS! Lyle the scorer - Airdrie 0:2 QOS
64 min He`s got it in the net again but this time it counts! A Queens corner falls to Russell on the left and his low cross is swept in by Lyle.
69 min Queens are really in control of this game now and are playing the ball about nicely.
70 min Substitution : Reilly on for Russell
72 min Airdrie should score as Queens lose the ball and the home side break. Bain eventually cuts the ball across the box only for Durnan to clear.
81 min Durnan shows his strength as he rises above McMillan to head McLaren`s free-kick clear. He`s had a good game tonight.
84 min Substitution : Slattery on for McShane
86 min Queens break from defending a corner with Carmichael and Lyle. Carmichael tries a curler from 18 yards but sends it over.
88 min Tonight`s man of the match Derek Lyle almost bags his hat-trick but his shot from 20 yards flies just wide.
90 min Great save Antell! Queens go to sleep at the back post where McLaren has a free header but his low effort is blocked well by the `keeper.
90+1 min Off the post Lyle! He just can`t get his third. A good, solid header cracks off the base of the post before McKenna`s rebound is saved.
21:35 FULL TIME - Airdrie 0:2 QOS
21:36 And a clean sheet as well will do wonders for the defence after conceding 6 in 2 games.
