Match Report

Queen of the South continued their unbeaten start to the season as they were held to a 0-0 draw against East Fife at Bayview.

After the game manager Allan Johnston expressed his disappointment at not being able to convert one of a number of chances into a fifth straight win.  He said: “First half was probably the best we’ve played all season.  Some of the passing and creating chances was brilliant but we’ve got to be more clinical and take our chances.  You can’t afford to create chances and not finish them.”

The first half began quite evenly with both teams sizing each other up.  The first chance of note fell to Queen of the South’s Chris Higgins as a Mitchell free-kick from wide dropped to the centre-back at the far post but he could only volley over from inside the six-yard-box.

East Fife’s main threat came from wide positions as Durie and Sloan gave their markers a tough time on the wings but Queens defended the crosses well enough.

The away side began to control possession of the ball and should have scored from a number of chances.  Nicky Clark missed the target with a header from inside the six-yard-box before Queens’ player-manager Allan Johnston missed a chance of his own.  The 38-year-old played a one-two with Derek Lyle but then skewed his effort wide from inside the area.

The Fifers were struggling to get the ball off the Dumfries side and could well have fallen behind seconds before half-time.  A deflected cross from the Queens right fell at the back-post where striker Nicky Clark was driving in but his header was somehow kept out by Michael Brown in the East Fife goal.

The second half began in much the same fashion with Queens on the front foot and they could have taken a deserved lead had Chris Higgins managed to connect with a header from a Mitchell corner.

The home side finally woke up after this and began to create opportunities for themselves.  First Paul McManus was played in on the penalty spot but Robinson was out quickly to block the shot and then David Muir smashed a long-range drive just inches over the Queens bar.

The Queens defence started to look a bit more worried as McKenna and Johnston picked up bookings and the Fifers were looking more confident.  Playing extra-time during the week was starting to catch up with the Queens players and they struggled to create any cohesive attacking moves.

The match was headed to a stalemate with both teams battling for the win but it was East Fife who were looking the more likely and their hopes of winning the game were boosted when Allan Johnston picked up his second booking with just minutes remaining.
Queens’ player-manager had no complaints as his late challenge merited a booking but he might feel hard done by as he only committed two fouls throughout the whole game and neither were in particularly dangerous areas of the pitch.  Johnston said: “That was just a silly tackle.  I shouldn’t have done that he was going nowhere.  It was silly.”

Derek Lyle was sacrificed for Derek Young as the away side shut-up shop and held on for a point.

The big striker had praise for the opposition after the match.  Lyle said: “All credit to East Fife, they made it hard for us but if we’d taken one of our chances we could have won the game comfortably.”
