Match Report

Queen of the South began their season with an impressive performance and result to match as they overcame Dumbarton at the Bet Butler Stadium in the first round of the Ramsden’s Cup.

The away side had two debutants and a trialist in the starting line-up as Mark Durnan started at centre-back, Willie Gibson on the right wing and Derek Young looked to earn himself a contract, playing in the centre of midfield.

Queens started on the front foot and created a good chance just five minutes into the game as Nicky Clark beat the offside trap but couldn’t slide his finish past Grindlay in the Dumbarton goal.

Clark created another chance for himself just ten minutes later as he brushed off a defender and found space for a shot but again his effort was straight at the goalkeeper.  Dan Carmichael followed up but after cutting inside his left-foot effort was again blocked by the ‘keeper.

Dumbarton began to cause problems in the Queens box with two dangerous crosses cleared from inside the six yard box before Derek Young cleared the ball off the line after a corner.

The game quietened down as half-time approached but Dumbarton’s Scott Agnew brought the save of the match out of Lee Robinson in stoppage time.  Chris Higgins gave away a free-kick twenty-five yards out and Agnew’s strike was headed inside the far post but Robinson dived full stretch to keep the game level going into the break.

The away side had just about edged the first half and Allan Johnston would be disappointed that his team hadn’t managed to find the breakthrough.

The second half began with big penalty shouts for both teams.  Firstly, Dumbarton were aggrieved as Kevin Holt looked to bring down his man before Robinson collected the ball and then just seconds later Nicky Clark was bundled over as he looked to shoot inside the Dumbarton box but on both occasions the referee refused to budge.

Kevin Smith then had a chance for Queens but his low effort was saved by the ‘keeper before Dan Carmichael placed an effort wide of the far post after good work by left-back Kevin Holt.

Finally, after seventy minutes of play Nicky Clark found the net to give Queen of the South a 1-0 lead.  It was created by Carmichael who beat his man on the edge of the box before getting to the by-line to cut across for Clark to score with an easy header.

Dumbarton were struggling to create anything against a stubborn Queens defence and their best efforts came from corners.  There was a brief scramble with ten minutes to go as the ball dropped two yards from the Queens goal but the Dumbarton attackers were thwarted as Robinson got a hand on the ball to allow a defender to knock it to safety.

Aside from that, the Doonhamers were comfortable and could even have finished the tie off as Nicky Clark raced away with Gavin Reilly providing a two on one but instead of shooting Clark elected to lay it on for his strike partner but overhit the pass and the chance was gone.

Into stoppage time and Queen of the South ran the game down by keeping possession and secured a good win away at a First Division side to put themselves into the hat for the second round.

14:38 And, not that you care, today`s referee is Gary Hilland, assisted by Brian McGarry and Stephen Allan.
14:45 Ok,the trialist starting for Queens is former Aberdeen player Derek Young and the other is Derek Lyle looking for a second spell at theclub
14:50 A new look to the Queens line-up with new signing Mark Durnan starting at the back and Willie Gibson back to make his second debut.
14:51 New signing Chris Mitchell starts on the bench after suffering a broken nose. Ouch.
14:54 This is the first time the two clubs have met since July 2010 where Queens triumphed 5-1 at Palmerston in a League Cup 1st Round match.
14:55 Queens manager Allan Johnston bagged the third that day.
14:57 Times have changed since then with Queens dropping to the 2nd Division and Dumbarton up to the 1st. Let`s see how the teams fare today.
14:58 The teams are out. `Mon the Doonhamers!
5 min First chance. Nicky Clark in behind the defence but his finish was straight at the `keeper and a follow up free-kick from Gibson flies over
7 min Both teams have lined up 4-4-2 but Queens have had the better of the early action so far.
13 min Another chance for Queens! Clark bursts through a challenge on the edge of the box and again is stopped by the Dumbarton goalie
14 min before Carmichael cuts inside and fires another shot on target saved again.
15 min Yellow Card : Dumbarton`s Creaney
17 min Some good defensive work by both centre backs, Durnan and Higgins, as Dumbarton put 3 good crosses into the 6 yard box. Dealt with well.
28 min The game has quietened down now but Dumbarton are starting to get shots on target whilst Queen`s early pressing has disappeared.
33 min Think Mark Durnan`s got away with about four handballs today. He`s played pretty well though so far.
35 min Decent attack from QoS as Smith gets down the left and finds Carmichael at the back post who`s volley skews wide. Just didn`t catch it.
37 min Two Queens players tackle each other in the middle of the park to set up a Dumbarton attack which comes to nothing. Manager won`t be pleased
45 min Dumbarton come close after a corner falls to Agnew but his chip ends up on top of the net.
45 min Yellow Card : Qos Higgins
Half Time HALF TIME - Dumbarton 0:0 QOS
Half Time What a save Robinson! Agnew hits the free-kick after Higgins` foul. It`s heading inside the post but Robinson flies full stretch to deny.
Half Time The first half was pretty even although Queens will feel they should be ahead after creating the best chances.
Half Time Dumbarton have threatened but Robinson`s save just before half-time is the only time he`s been stretched.
45 min We`re off! All to play for.
49 min BIG penalty shout for Dumbarton. Looked like Holt was the wrong side and took out his marker. Queens got away with one there.
50 min Even BIGGER penalty shout for Queens turned down!
50 min Seconds after Dumbarton`s appeal Queens` Clark is brought down in front of goal. The ref says no.
51 min Another chance for the Doonhamers as Kevin Smith gets in at an angle and shoots low but the `keeper saves well.
53 min Yellow Card : QoS McKenna for a lunge in the middle of the park
55 min Frantic first 10 mins of the second half. Penalty appeals, shots, yellow cards, all we need now is a goal.
57 min Chance for Carmichael. Holt gets behind his opposite fullback and pulls it back to Carmichael whose shot is placed wide.
63 min Substitution : Reilly on for Smith
65 min Good save by Robinson. Dumbarton`s full back overlaps and fires a shot in.
69 min GOAL QUEENS! Clark the scorer
71 min Well worked by Carmichael who threw in a couple of step-overs to beat the defender before finding Nicky Clark`s head to take the lead.
73 min It`s been coming. The boys just need to keep this up.
78 min Chance! Reilly heads wide from Carmichael`s free-kick. Think that`s the boy`s first touch after coming on. Close.
78 min Dumbarton head a corner just wide.
79 min Substitution : Lyle on for Gibson
79 min The home crowd boo Willie Gibson as he strolls off but he`s in no hurry.
83 min Scramble in the Queens` box! A corner drops around the back post and nobody can hoof it clear. Eventually Robinson gets a hand on it.
88 min Dumbarton putting on pressure but have a weak penalty appeal turned down after a corner.
90+1 min Great chance to seal it for Queens! It`s two on one with Clark driving at goal but instead of shooting he decides to lay it on for Reilly...
90+1 min ...but his pass is way too hard and the chance goes begging. Not long to go now.
16:47 FULL TIME - Dumbarton 0:1 QOS
16:49 Good start to the season for Queens and a good performance to go with it and a Second Round tie to look forward to.
16:50 Doesn`t look good for Willie Gibson as he goes down the tunnel with his arm in a sling. Don`t know how serious it is.
16:50 Thanks for logging onto the site, I hope you`ve enjoyed it. Have a good weekend!
