I remember attending a Queens reserve match in one of the Southern Counties (Semi finals I think!) ties. The game was against Saint Cuthbert Wanderers and I think Queens were leading 7 or 8 nothing. Anyway, I remember one of the Saints players walking off as he was angry about the score, he just waved to the 200 or so fans and went inside.
Was this game recorded as I certainly have not forgotten it? |

| QUESTION | David Craig |
| It has come to my attention that my uncles (brothers)both played for QOTS in the early 1920's. The family name is Craig and I think the first name was Robert & Tom. Any information or a team picture would be appreciated. |
| ANSWER |
|
In season 1919-20 we have a Craig who made one appearance, in season 1920-21 we also have a single appearance from a player called Craig and in 1921-22 we have records of four appearances for a player called Craig. Club records indicate that a player called Craig was signed on the 20th October 1921 from Thornhill for a signing on fee of £5 plus £1 per game. There were no first names or initials used in any of the records that we have but we believe that the Craig signed from Thornhill also went on to play for Carlisle United.
You also mention that you have a newspaper cutting indicating that they both played for Queens, could you forward that via email as it may throw some more light onto the details. Thanks. Ian Black |

| QUESTION | Kieran Fallon |
| I am interested in a team known as Tayleurians FC. My wife's grandfather, John Lewis Graham played in goal for them and we have a team photo of them when they won a competition in the season 1920-21. We have the gold medal (shaped like a shield) he received but it has no inscription. We'd be grateful for any information. Thanks |
| ANSWER |
|
The team was founded by Mrs Lillian Tayleur in 1910 who was a prominent social worker in Dumfries. She worked closely with under privileged children and set up a Boy's Club which had it's premises located in Buccleuch Street. The Boy's Club provided expert tuition for the children in the sport of boxing, gymnastics and athletics as well as the Tayleurians Football team. Mrs Tayleur lived locally at Kirconell Lea just out of Glencaple and also formed the Scouting movement in Dumfries around the same time.
In season 1920/21 Tayleurians F.C. won the Queen of the South Junior Challenge Shield, it is most likely that this is the team group photographed and the medal that you refer to. We have a photograph in the Queen of the South Museum at Palmerston of the Shield winning team with Mrs Lillian Tayleur sitting in the centre and the shield that they won prominently displayed - this is possibly the same photograph that you have. We also have the Shield in the Museum. Ian Black |
| QUESTION | John Williamson |
|
Dear Ian,
Prior to the First World War there were so many Australian medical students attending Scottish Universities they formed their own Australian Club in plush premises at 12 Archibald Place in Edinburgh. Many were Australian Rules players who converted to the rugby code whilst they were in Scotland eg RH Morrison and AB Timms played for Scotland and both were champion Aussie Rules players with Geelong. (Many Scots were involved in the beginnings of Aussie Rules in Melbourne in the late 1850's ie Alexander Morrison from Aberdeen the headmaster of Scotch College organised the 'first match' in August 1858, the co-umpire was John Macadam from Glasgow and the first Challenge Cup for the code was donated at the Victorian Caledonian Games on the MCG in Dec 1861. I am trying to check on a story which was on the front page of a periodical called ‘Scottish Sport’ and read thus-A football match was played at Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia, on 11th May last, between Carlton and South Melbourne, in splendid weather. Carlton started the ball, and, after some give-and-take play, opened the score with a splendid low shot from the foot of J.Burns. South Melbourne tried hard to equalise, but the defence was too good and, towards the close, Carlton added two other goals from Burns - the teams crossing over 3 to 0 in favour of Carlton. On re-starting, the South Melbourne scored from Grant (late Queen of the South Wanderers). The Carlton also scored this half. Result - 4 to 1 in favour of Carlton.
Camelon and Queen of the South were both Scottish rugby teams, which begs a number of questions. Were Burns and Grant themselves of Scottish origin, or were they perhaps Australians who had spent some time in Scotland? How many other players with Scottish - or indeed British - connections were playing in the VFA at this time? Ian, do you know if Camelon and Queen of the South Wanderers were rugby teams and would you have any record of J Burns (Camelon) or Grant of Queen of the South Wanderers. We don't know if they are Aussies or Scots. Yours sincerely John Williamson |
| ANSWER |
|
John, Queen of the south Wanderers were a football club and not a rugby club they came from Dumfries they were founded in 1873 and folded in 1894. Had a look at some old team photos of Q of s Wands but could not find a player called Grant.

My uncle, James Tulips used to play for Falkirk in 1937/38. He previously played for Blantyre Celtic. I found a newspaper report for January 1938 for a Q O S V St. Mirren game, which mentioned a goal scored by a player called Tulip (note the singular version of the name). Our name is often spelt wrongly as the singular version, though it is common in England. Can you tell me if my uncle also Played for Q of the S, or is this another person entirely?
My father told me many years ago, that when uncle James scored a goal there was a headline in the paper saying "Tiptoe through the Tulips". Since this headline may have been in "pink pages of Evening Times", which are not archived by Mitchell Library, seems I cannot prove this story. Your help would be appreciated. |

Hi I am researching the life and war effort of Dumfries man Edward (Ned) Callander. I have been told he travelled with the 1936 european tour team to France where he joined the French foreign Legion. He died a war hero later whilst serving with the RAF. Could anyone possibly help with this. I would be very greatful. I hope to publish this book later next year.

From our records we would advise that no one called Callander appeared in any of the games on the European Tour or for that matter played first team for Queens in any games around that period.

| QUESTION | Willie Pool |
| With Andy Thomson back in the team how many more goals would he have to score (to better Bobby Black and Jim Patterson) to move up from the clubs 3rd highest to 2nd highest and finally highest goal scorer? |
| ANSWER |
|
With Andy presently on 112 (18/09/06)goals he needs to net another 8 to equal Bobby Black which may well be possible, however to equal the great Jim Patterson 'Super Andy' needs to knock in another 139 - not really a possibility, so Jim's record is safe and will be for a very long time.

| Can you give any details of a friendly played at Palmerston against Manchester City, probably late 70's or early 80's. I remember Man City wore red and black away kit, and I am positive Danny McGrain played for us at some point during the game. Cheers PB |
| ANSWER |
|
This was Allan's second testimonial for the club, his first was a match against Carlisle United in 1971. The game you refer to took place on the 9th September 1984 when City manager Billy McNeill brought his side to play a Queens select. The Queens side did indeed feature Danny McGrain from Celtic as well as Davie Cooper from Rangers and a former Queens hero in the shape of a certain Rowan Alexander who was with St.Mirren by that time. The football was secondary though and despite the 5-1 victory for City it was a great occasion for everyone.

| QUESTION | Laurence Seagrave |
|
Hi, An enquiry as to wether Larry Seagrave played for QOS appears on your web site. Larry Seagrave played one game for QOS in season 1925-26, in which he broke his leg. He played under an alias (not known) which he did with several clubs. The reason for this is that he had amateur status and made some money as a sort of football mercenary, which was fairly common at that time. He also did this with Sunderland, Albion Rovers and possibly Celtic. The wages clubs of the time offered to players were generally very poor and tradesmen could earn more working at their trade and playing football on the side.
I have noticed several enquiries which appear to have been fruitless and this may be one of the reasons that some players are not registered with the club. I would also like to add that your web site is very interesting indeed. Keep up the good work. |
| ANSWER |
|
Hi Laurence, thanks very much for the information. Looking again it could well be that the alias used by Larry was 'Newman'. We have one listed for the match that took place on the 26th December 1925.

I'd be grateful if you could research available records and confirm the number of my appearances for both the reserves and first team, league/cups and friendlies, giving details of opponents if possible. I was registered with Queens during '79 to '82 under 3 managers, Willie ? - I ought to remember, he signed me! , Billy Little and George Herd.
Many thanks, Tommy |

Firstly Tommy it was Willie Hunter that signed you. On the other questions we'll see what we can come up with.
Signed in October 1979 from your home town side Annan Athletic you made 8 appearances out of a possible 39 in your first season. In the following season you made 14 appearances plus two as substitute scoring one league goal in our promotion season. Your first game was at home versus Stranraer on 27 October 1979 and your last versus Montrose at Palmerston on 6 December 1980. You played in the following friendlies: Sheffield Wednesday 1980/81 Ards 1980/81 (scoring two goals) and you may have played in more but we just don't have 100% comprehensive records. All of the other appearances were in league matches with no cup appearances that we can see. Ian Black |
